Would You Ever Buy a Boat?

If you asked Tony and I, it would be a resounding, “Yes!”

But, alas, the question never came up. Not in the traditional sense. The subject came up casually sitting at the dock when Tony casually mentioned, “this may be our last season sailing.” Yes, we already had a boat - a lovely 1991 Catalina 28 named “Vela Via”. Oh the memories ...

Tony’s statement at the dock that day amongst friends, struck me like a ton of bricks! And, we both engaged in a long, puzzling, smiling gaze at one another. Tony was surprised that I was surprised. Apparently, he had been hinting at it for quite some time pointing out this power boat and that power boat. Oh, well. Without getting into the whole Venus vs. Mars discussion, we have purchased a 1997 Bayliner 3788.

And what a grueling process that was. I liked what our son, John’s sweetie McKenzie said to us like, it’s been a lesson in patience. Boy howdy! Especially when purchasing a boat from out of state. Yup, Tony found the boat of our dreams in Huntington Beach, California in October of 2017 after searching online, AGAIN, after another local boat-offer fell through.

We’ll share more as we go along about all the things that have transpired between then and now (potential boat-buyers beware; some of the details may be disturbing like; we’ve owned the boat 29 days and still don’t have it).

“Caspian’s Journey” begins! Our boat is now on it’s way to us via I-5! I can’t wait to step foot on it for the first time!

The generator had enough going on to warrant its own dedicated post. Unlike sailboats most motor yachts have a generator of some sort. Motor yachters tend to be more concerned with creature comforts like at home. We're probably more akin to motor homers than the sail boat crowd from where I come. We have things like electric heat, air conditioning, microwave ovens, electric stove tops, large refrigerators and (gasp) big TVs. "We" not including Bernie and I. We are accustomed to engine noise while underway since most of our cruising time in transit on Vela Via was during light air times while we were on a schedule. Over the refit hump

I titled this a couple of months ago as I was drafting the list of items tended to since the previous post and the title isn't as good a fit now as it was then but who cares anyway. Here's the deal. It takes about as much time to write a blog entry as it does to knock one or two items off of the todo list and the todo list has been long. Usually I set some kind of goal regarding what I'd like to have accomplished by the next planned cruise. For the very first cruise back in April or May I wanted to have propulsion, heat, refrigeration and a working toilet. Before a long cruise to Beacon Rock I wanted the serious engine maintenance items done which consisted of fluid changes and after cooler servicing along with the sanitation hoses replaced. For this trip down to Astoria where I sit right now typing this out I wanted the engine fuel filters and house batteries replaced. 600 Watts of solar power

It has been a while since we posted anything here. Much work has been done since. It will be another month or so before I can get caught up. I am posting one particular improvement now though as there has been interest in the project on the Bayliner Owners Club forum I participate in. So here goes. How much current might one get at about 46 degrees latitude in the Pacific Northwest on a clear summer day? I took readings from the solar controller the first chance I got. The batteries had been carrying the house load for about 20 hours. These are the readings I took from the time I awoke to the time we headed home: 8 amps, 12.4 volts at 8:00 18.5 amps 13.2 volts at 9:30 27 amps, 13.5 volts 11:30 27 amps 14 volts 13:00 20 amps, 14.3 volts at 14:00 20 amps, 14 volts at 15:00 Not too shabby!
