ONAN MDKD 8KW Generator

The generator had enough going on to warrant its own dedicated post. Unlike sailboats most motor yachts have a generator of some sort. Motor yachters tend to be more concerned with creature comforts like at home. We're probably more akin to motor homers than the sail boat crowd from where I come. We have things like electric heat, air conditioning, microwave ovens, electric stove tops, large refrigerators and (gasp) big TVs. "We" not including Bernie and I. Well yes, we purchased a motor yacht but we are out to avoid becoming full fledged motor yachters. We prefer a propane cook top over electric and solar power over a generator. We are accustomed to engine noise while underway since most of our cruising time in transit on Vela Via was during light air times while we were on a schedule. 600 Watts of solar power

It has been a while since we posted anything here. Much work has been done since. It will be another month or so before I can get caught up. I am posting one particular improvement now though as there has been interest in the project on the Bayliner Owners Club forum I participate in. So here goes. How much current might one get at about 46 degrees latitude in the Pacific Northwest on a clear summer day? I took readings from the solar controller the first chance I got. The batteries had been carrying the house load for about 20 hours. These are the readings I took from the time I awoke to the time we headed home: 8 amps, 12.4 volts at 8:00 18.5 amps 13.2 volts at 9:30 27 amps, 13.5 volts 11:30 27 amps 14 volts 13:00 20 amps, 14.3 volts at 14:00 20 amps, 14 volts at 15:00 Not too shabby! Day 7 - We rest

Time to recap the week. This evening marks one week since Caspian arrived. Sunday Evening and night: Caspian arrived outside of Fred's Marina in Portland, OR. We unstrapped, untaped and moved stuff around to free up the Master Stateroom and tried to sleep. Monday morning: We awoke to the boat hull being inside out. Translation, water on the wrong side of the hull. We were still on the trailer so it was all rain water. Bernie probably mentioned having the fly bridge torn apart plus coming from So. Cali where it rarely rains who knows what had collected in the scuppers. We had a 9 am appointment to launch but this would not happen. Casey arrived at 9:30 and drove the boat into Multnomah Yacht Repair for the launch. We are learning about the concept of "yard time". Debra who manages the appointments at MYR had indicated that our launch would be delayed 15 minutes by their putting another boat ahead of us.
